The Counterfeit Halocast

On an Industrial visit with my class (I am the lecturer, though most of my students are elder than myself, they all have had work experience before joining in for MBA) got a chance to visit the sub-urbs of the city.
The scroching sun in the rainless monsoons was making us all look for drinking water with each passing 10 minutes. The Merchandise Shop located in the locality was making money, selling "mineral water bottles" n "Colas" to the thirsty crows on the Industrial visit.
As I emptied the tumbler carrying with myself, I heard some disturbances among the students.. I cornered to interrupt and ask what the matter was. Shipra seemed annoyed with the rest on being teased as "Ms. Super Hygenic" for she were asking them not to buy the "so called bottled water" for it not being actually the "Bagpiper", rather being adultered..
I had a look if she was right, n she was right. A piece of plastic paper was bound n joined together instead of a seal that should have been there on a mineral water bottle.
Its not just one case, we come across many such happenings in our immidiate surroundings everyday.
We get along numerous brands right from the dawn, when we"Colgate" our teeth, till late nights when we switch off our "Sony's", to wake up to another day with trusted brands.
But sometimes when we find out that our reliable Brands aint exactly wat we bought, we feel ditched.
Many a times, we go shopping in hurry and pick up our routine things with a glimpse of familiar logos, designs, graphics on the packaging. And on discovering "FLAIR & LONLY" rather than "FAIR & LOVELY" some of us, really dont do anything like complaining against the vendor.
The fake brands are being sold in the market like as such and the counterfeiters are making money.
According to a FICCI study, the impact of counterfeiting was highest in the software sector to the extent of 70 per cent, next came auto parts where the impact was about 35 per cent, down the ladder came the pharma sector with 15 to 20 per cent impact, and then the FMCG sector with between five and 15 per cent impact.
These "look alike" products are not just a substitute for the genuine brand, but not maintaining the quality standards, these counterfeits, are hazardous to the users.
Unknowingly, we entertain such "business-people", who donot hesitate taking lives of the people as a five year old treats his "teddy- bear".
Many of us dont know when "TATA SALT" becomes "TAJA SALT" or "NIRMA" becomes "NISHMA", not even do we spot much when "COCA COLA" becomes "CAMPA COLA" and "LIFEBOUY" becomes "LIEEBOYE".
Apart from the harmful effects on the consumers, these counterfeitings, are bad for the Brands as well.
BRAND is a company's greatest asset. Brand is a promise of value and an assurance of quality that every customer looks for. Yet counterfeit products, artful lookalikes, are constantly entering millions of homes and bleeding brands of their reputation.
According to a survey that was conducted in Chennai where a fake product was given to 100 customers, out of the 100 people surveyed for this, about 85 did not realise that they had got a duplicate product. About five persons said `it's my fate', another four were angry and were on the verge of marching to the distributor, which they did not finally do, and one person said he was going to write to the company about the fake product being in the market. Shows how much awareness consumers have about the products they want to buy.

This is a problem even higher in rural areas and sub urban areas.

The most comprehensive and effective remedy to avoid such traps is the consumer awareness and we need to wake up actually and know the consumer rights.

Look- alikes are fun, but only in wax museums.

Innocence, no more...

I ne’er breathed ‘til I first cried;

And cry, I now; since humanity has died.

Yes, the world is dead! D-E-A-D!

Yet, I still pray for my daily bread…

D-E-A-D? Is that what you heard me squeal?

Oh yes! Isn’t it the dead who do not feel?

I am an object of your desire- amorous;

To you, I’m “raven-haired”, I’m “glamorous”!

But was that a boon? Or was that MY bane!

I unknowingly trudged the Devil’s lane…

You penetrated my innocence, for your delight!

In God-knows-how-many houses of the night.

“Godparent” has since been given a new meaning;

Something shamefully demeaning!

This “(gl)amorous one” has been grounded,

Ever since the fleur-de-lis was upon me, branded!

As I await her Ladyship to remove her famous blindfold,

I can only but feel life ebb, and cease to hold…

A Special Provision

The following is specially to inform everybody about a law that entitles you to declare your unwillingness to support any candidate during the polls, if according to you there's no candidate who deserves to represent your constituency.

Did you know that there is a system in our constitution, as per the 1969 act, in section "49-O" that a person can go to the polling booth, confirm his identity, get his finger marked and convey the presiding election officer that he doesn't want to vote for anyone!

Yes such a feature is available, but obviously these seemingly notorious leaders have never disclosed it.

This is called "49-O". Why should you go and say "I VOTE NOBODY"... because, in a ward, if a candidate wins, say by 123 votes, and that particular ward has received "49-O" votes more than 123, then that polling will be cancelled and will have to be re-polled. Not only that, but thecandidature of the contestants will be removed and they cannot contest the re-polling, since people had already expressed their decision on them.

This would bring fear into parties and hence look for genuine candidates for their parties for election. This would change the way,of our whole political system... it is seemingly surprising why the election commission has not revealed such a feature to the public....Please spread this news to as many as you know... Seems to be a wonderful weapon against corrupt parties in India... show your power, expressing your desire not to vote for anybody, is even more powerful than voting... so don't miss your chance.

So either vote, or vote not to vote (vote 49-O) and pass this info on...

"Please forward this "LAW" to as many as possible, so that we, the people of India, can really use this power to elect the right representatives.

Satyameva Jayate - Free speech

  • More than 40 people have died in the riots that have followed the killing of Swami Lakshmanananda in Kandhamal in Orissa.
  • 5 people were killed and 47 injured in Mumbai when Jerry Falwell made some comments saying that the Prophet of Islam was a violent man and a terrorist.
  • 12 people had died in Mumbai in anti-rushdie riots.
There are more instances I can point out, but these stand out because of the scale and because of how related India is to last two people. Mr. Falwell runs a Christian ministry in US and Salman Rushdie, although ethically an Indian, had migrated to Pakistan and was a citizen of UK at that time. Of all riots that took place all over the world following the statement by Jerry Falwell and against Salman Rushdie, India was the only place with causalities. Orissa has been a hotbed of communal tensions between Hindus and Christians for a while now.

India is the largest democracy which is more than 60 years old. Why then are we so undemocratic in our conduct?

I will not say that the resentment held by the people, the rage that they feel over their prophet being called a terrorist and over the death of their religious leader is wrong but we have to understand that free speech, besides being constitutional, is also more powerful than any violence. If the forced conversions were documented, shown to people, if people tried to prove that Mohammad was a peaceful person instead of killing innocent people, then that would have a lasting influence. Truth can be the only victor in a open debate.

Other resulting major problem is the lack of knowledge and reasoning, people take to streets before realizing the details of an issue. I have asked many people who spoke about the cartoons issue, Rushdie's book, hussains paintings, etc. they do not know what was shown in the cartoons and under what pretext or even the name of the newspaper in question; they do not know what the theme of Rushdies book was and why it was blasphemous. The people who went on a carnage in Orissa do not realize that Maoists have claimed responsibility and that christian organizations have condemned it.

I support complete free speech with no exceptions. It does not have to do with any ideology, varied opinions on all subjects can only benefit the people and the ones involved to make a right decision. If we educate the masses and tell them the details about the various issues we stand for or feel about, then the people would be better knowledgeable. And hope is that, in the end, truth alone shall win. Satyameva Jayate.

Make a Difference

Finally, some good seems to have come out of my interest in watching newer ads and posting reviews about them. The following comes from the new Tata Tea ad that aptly says Election ke din agar aap vote nahi kar rahe ho, toh aap so rahe ho, i.e. 'If on the election day, you are not voting then you are as good as asleep!'

Since I have written so much about bidding good-byes to politicians, let me now tell you how you can make a difference as well.

Romance and Cellphones

Gravitation cannot be held responsible for people falling in love.-- Albert Einstein
These days the romance is dependent upon cellphones. Notes of love are exchanged through text messaging, love starts and ends via cellphones. For instance a guy proposes a girl calling up..the affair blooms, the couple reaches the pinnacle but the flowers of love are dried up and the fragrance of love cannot be smelt after sometime because the couple has now had a break up..interestingly via cellphones..so the cellphones have become boon for some- who are continuing in their affair..bane for same - who had a breakup..SO AS IT IS SAID-- AN IDEA CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE!!! for ur good or worse..on top of that the cellphone companies provide packages of free calling and free messaging..so that you are connected!! LOVE CONNECTS..but here via cellphones!!interesting concept huh?saves your time and money..as people dedicate love cards, romantic songs all through cellphones.im not saying that cellphones should be banned..just saying ..discretion is necessary..n when we talk about TRUE LOVE ..it doesn't need cellphones or internet!one glance of a person may remain with you forever and that is true love..True love doesn't mean union of two people..it means u give your heart without asking for the other person's love.

Ticket Allotment and Debates...

Hi All,

I am sure that you must have heard of the upcoming presidential race in the USA.. I have been following the race and the events leading up to it..Actually i had been doing so since the last time round when Bush and Kerry went head to head but i wasn't into blogging then...So i decided that i should write about a couple of things that have gotten my attention esp the allotment of tickets to the candidates and how the presidential candidates woo voters thru debates...

Ok coming back to the point..i was quite impressed at the level of transparency and the professionalism with which the primaries were held..candidates aspiring to run on the party ticket announce their decision and form a camp and run around the entire country to convince the party faithfuls that he/she is the right candidate for the party ticket...they can do so regardless of their gender, age, financial status, years of association with the party and its top leaders etc...

compare this with india..political parties go into a huddle months before election is announced..nominate ,mostly, the party leader as their primemisterial candidate and in case one is not available ..try to search a candidate with a good credentials(knowing fully well that they wouldnt be able to find one)and finally settle for one who is old, is the least tainted, "close" to party elders and acceptable to other coalition parties..could somebody tell me what happened to "suitability to the job", "leadership skills", "team playing abilities" "awareness of issues concerning the common man" etc...

u see there are compromises at every step...every compromise pushing the most eligible candidate further and further away and giving way for dynasty politics, nepotism and cronyism ...

now coming to the point abt debates...this one astonished me even more and completely won me over...what a way present the varying views of the candidates to the voter and let him choose who he wants...and if u had watched how the 1st debate transpired probably u will spit in the faces of Indian politicians who use their lung power to get their point home when they participate in shows like 'face the nation' and the likes...such was the decency and mutual respect for each other..when one was talking the other had his mouth SHUT...and if there was anything to rebut they just jotted it down and stated it later when given the opportunity..i guess i dont have to tell u abt their knowledge on issues..having spent months running around the country explaining their stands on various issues they certainly would have no problems in that regard...

the bottom line of the entire presidential exercise in the US is that if a candidate wishes to become the next president of the united states then he has to work for it.. meet the people, learn the issues, take appropriate stands and be prepared to justify his stand...this exercise ensures that only people who are willing to sweat it out will enter the fray and not just any tom dick and harry...and there is no place for political rhetoric..i.e.no "thanga thalaiva(golden leader)", "anja nejun(brave heart)" and crap...no place for political smears/dirty politics etc...
