A Reason to Pray...

My search goes on, seemingly vain…
Traumatic times are a regular phase.
For at each turn, I behold only pain.
Oh why should my people see such days?

I see my land bathed in innocents' blood…
I fear her future is decreed thus bleak.
As I await His light – the cleansing flood.
I remain entranced by this surreal mystique.

I hear a moan, I hear a cry…
The land is too blood-soaked to till.
As we wait for it all to dry;
The twisted folk deem more blood, to spill!

What times are these, which we live in…?
Beneath clouds so dark and skies so grey.
I listen’d to tales of the Devil’s grin…
And unto Frey, did I turn to pray.

O Lord! May Thy rule stay Divine…
For our hours on ye Earth are entirely Thine.
I pray – as this sun sets in decline,
It brings peace upon this beloved land of mine!

Republic Day Event!

Happy Republic Day people! Wishes and dreams that flow on such an occasion in India often comes along with blemishes to humanity, to democracy and to Indian Constitution. Do you think of it? Do you get concerned?

I would like to attract you to the mishap that took place in Mangalore, Karnataka on the eve on Republic Day. A group of anti social activists from the Sri Ram Sena stormed into a pub and attacked the women guests in there. They abused, assaulted, battered and beat up those women who were (perhaps) enjoying the Republic Day eve. I saw the news in the channels just before the Republic Day parade started at the Rajpath, Delhi. That was the first news of the day. I was shocked to see these inhuman spineless moving object (called Sri Ram Sena activists, supposed to be men) executing the assault. This is what is happening in India on the eve of 60th Republic Day.

I am not concerned about what the women were doing there. I am concerned with the fact that people who have named themselves as Sri Ram Sena, are doing such ruthless and cruel acts. I dislike these religious political parties as much as I dislike the Pakistani terror groups. They both are synonymous and cause equal harm to the thought behind the republic of India. What do you think are those terrorists thinking when they hear this news? Yes! They are laughing their lungs out. How do you think that India will rise against terrorism, while we are indulged in such malicious activities within ourselves? India was never united – right from the time of Siraj-ud-Daulah till date. We betray each other, we envy each other and we fail to stand beside ourselves. This is how the fanatics get chance to enter our heart and tear it apart – and get away untouched!

In a secular country like India, how can parties like Sri Ram Sena, Shiv Sena, Muslim League and Bajarang Dal etc. be politically recognized? Is this not a slap on the face of secularism or the Republic of India as a whole? We can never forget what Muslim League has brought upon us, 60 years ago. How can the government identify one more religion based parties politically? These are all wraths to Indian sovereign. If India wants to become a super power and actually challenge terrorism the first thing that needs to be done is to isolate these Mir Jafars from ourselves and hang them in broad daylight – once and for all. Raj Thakrey, the canny sly politician, who crafted all the communalism against North Indian people in Mumbai and Maharashtra as a whole went underground right after the terror attack on Mumbai. Was he there to talk about the brave North Indian (let me use this word here for once) commandoes, who saved Mumbai? No! Because he never thought Mumbai, or Maharashtra or India to be his own. He thought only about the power and government in Maharashtra, for all he cared about is his own political gains. Similar are these leaders of other groups – Sri Ram Sena et. al. – they are the last people to think about anyone else – not even for this cowardly group who carried out this operation in Mangalore.

Sri Ram Sena? Shame on you all! In the land of Rama and Sita, you are assaulting and abusing women? How hypocritical and how shameful acts! To hell with your party and to hell with your politics! In fact, you are no politicians at all. You are just a group of anti social elements who needs to be bashed naked till death. If you have the smallest of respect for your own mothers, sisters and wives, please stop these inhuman activities and get into a life, where you can be regarded as human beings.

Mates, there are huge threats to Indian Republic from all over the world. The nearest and most vivid dangers are countries like Pakistan, China, Bangladesh etc. the Americans and British are not far from declaring war against India – the only thing that is holding them is Indian Unity and growing power – be it economic or nuclear. India is shining and rising and it will not rise anymore if we hold it back and tie it up with ropes of anti social activities, communalism, terrorism and dualism. Get together – get along and be the backbone of Indian Democracy – and do not become spineless yourselves. Let us come together and stand united. Hope to have a better India – a better place to live in – a better place to breathe in! Jai Hind!

Times Of India's Viewpoint on this issue:
Organisations like the Sri Ram Sena are emboldened to act as they did in Mangalore because the cost-benefit equation works out very well for them. The benefit from such boorish moral policing is in the form of national publicity that lures fresh recruits to the ‘cause’. And the cost is possible arrest and a very short jail term. It’s important, therefore, to raise the costs. In this case, for instance, they could be charged under Section 153A that deals with offences against public tranquillity and carries a sentence of up to three years. It must be used not just against the actual miscreants, but also office-bearers of the Sena. Rigorous prosecution leading to conviction should help persuade them to desist from such anti-social behaviour in future.

Create Some Knowledge

Two hundred years back we were the second biggest economy in the world and our economy was about 20% of the world's economy. Today we have 20% of the world's population but our economy is just 2% of the world economy.

In contrast the US which was less than 2% of the world economy two hundred years back today is the biggest with a size of over 25% of the world economy.

Why has this happened? Two hundred years is not that long a period. But during this time the fall of India has been drastic. Also importantly how do we get back to our place of eminence in this world?

There are many reasons for our downfall since 1800. We can argue that one prominent reason is British rule. But I think the main reason is that we have stopped creating new knowledge. I have given some numbers on who are the creators of knowledge in this world here. Today we have the largest pool of science and technology qualified people in the world. But our contribution to the knowledge of the world is very small. We have stopped being leaders in the creation of knowledge and have become followers. We have stopped creating new knowledge and have become users of knowledge. But what is knowledge. Knowledge includes means of improving farming, means of producing new goods and services.

How many times have you waited at the bus stop not knowing when the next bus is come? Almost everyday? Now dont you think there can be a service that can automatically determine how far the next bus is from your bus stop. How much time would this save every Indian?

Have you wondered why there is a perpetual crowd of vehicles at our airports and railway stations and why it takes so much time to maneuver through this mess? Dont you think just a few simple steps to manage traffic better would save so much hassle for every Indian.

Knowledge doesnt have to put a rocket on the moon everytime. Look at any successful company they all started out trying to solve simple but relevant problems in innovative ways. All Google wanted to do was to organize the data on the internet. In doing that they became one of the most valuable companies of our times. Good knowledge helps solve everyday problems in innovative ways.

Each one of us has to innovate in our life. We all have to create knowledge to make our lives easier, to grow our economy and get back our rightful place in this world.

Suicide

Suicide

I learned this word when i was a small kid listening to "veeru" of film sholay as he was shouting suicide...suicide..suicide...and i learned the meaning of suicide
over the period of time...i have hear many opinions about suicide,,,many condemned it as an act of cowardice...some say its an act out of utter desperation,,,
we were always taught its a bad thing ... something week people do...
Also...i observe a lot many cases of suicide these days...farmers doing it because of problems with their land, crops, and loans they taken,,,urban youth doing it for the sheer depression of their jobs,,,kids again for pressure of studies...peer pressure and
depression...even am often tempted by this great idea of giving up life...but alas stop myself because of the ambitions i have to achieve..hehe
I think suicide involves lots of courage...try slapping yourself hard once...u will realize how tough it is to hit yourself...let alone to take your own life...
so we shouldnt call it cowardice...also everyone has a right to lead his or her own life...to end it at least a person should have that kind of freedom...why should we bound our lives for the family...friends etc etc...doesn't our life matters to us at all...we all like to have a say how should we lead it but not how to end it???just because some people want us for their support...i don't really approve of this idea...
Still i think we should show concern to attempted suicides by students...also those by the farmers...rising stress level has increased the rate,,,but so much importance is given to stress and depression...suicide is like a neglected problem..this is also
because we fail to club together all the categories of people committing suicide everything is so scattered...children commit suicide or attempt to its often hidden from rest of the world...farmers die and its taken note of,to keep the numbers in records ..govt data as they call...professional people end their lives and stray cases re reported to police and all...my point is that no constructive efforts re being taken...even talking about suicide is done in hush hush manner as to discourage it especially in front of a stressed out person...
I think its time society changes its perception ... its outlook of suicide...
the tall buildings of concrete being built re the most vulnerable points for suicide
...wake up folks do something about it...

Forgotten?

Is Mumbai forgotten? Those terror struck nights of November 2008, when the whole country was burning along with Mumbai following the attacks by roguish Pakistan have cut deep in my mind to just forget them this easily. What happened after that? What about the candles and mourning over the death of the brave soldiers? What about all the evidence we collected against Pakistan? Is this not enough to just throw a war against them? How long should India wait? How many times do we overlook these filthy people of Pakistan?

At present, India has all the evidences that trigger to the fact that the attack was done after a well planned Pakistan venture. The terrorists were Pakistani, their trainers were Pakistani and the whole terrorist group spreading panic is Pakistani – its proven now – the Indian Government knows it, the United Nations Organization knows it, the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA knows this fact. Then, why the hell are we Indians waiting? Why can’t we just declare war against these fanatics?

The Government is going by the book, it seems. They gathered all the information from Kasab (the Pakistani terrorists captured in Mumbai) and forwarded the same evidences to the Pakistani Government to take action! What a joke! I am unsure if I should call this an immature shaggy dog story or height of optimism. How can we expect those same people who sent these criminals to perform this mayhem in Mumbai to dramatically (and catastrophically) change overnight and take measures to hinder terrorist activities in Pakistan and stop terrorism? Typically, the Pakistani Government did not take any step and even did not acknowledge the receipt of the evidence sent by the Foreign Minister, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee. Instead, they have reinforced their troops along the western and north western border of India; as if they are preparing for a war. Yes they are! On the other thoughts, they are not preparing – they are just continuing with what they were doing since their inception – creating panic in India.

Pakistan is at the top of the ladder in creating bloodshed. They are spreading all over the world now. They have been doing such inhuman brutal acts for a long time now and have not shown any signs of retreating or refraining from too. It is time to end their cruelty and cut the throat of terrorism in the world. What a disgraceful country! What a dishonorable government! What shameful acts! The government shouts at the peak of its voice and tells that the events in Mumbai were carried out by Indian Government ourselves – what dishonor mate! We kill our own people and our foreign guests, destroying our heritage buildings and messing up with the entire peace balance of the country and the present and future tourism prospects just to bring bad name to these unworthy Pakistanis? Shut up!

The Indian Government was to play a big role here; but somehow I feel it is taking the easy way out. I hope they just do not keep blaming the Pakistanis and keep quiet. I know the Pakistanis are at fault – we all know this. There is nothing to prove Mr. Prime Minister et al. We do not
want you to prove anything in front of us – not any more. I am sure the citizens want action now and want to see Pakistan eradicated from the map of the world. They don’t stand against us – not then, not now, not ever! Their forces may be treacherous, but are not powerful. Their government may be cunning, but not impressive. Their people may be like us, but they are terrorists!!!!! It is time we take our steps forward. It is time we just stop blaming a crazy dog for biting us and kill it; for this is the ultimate destination of it. It’s already one and a half moths past the incidence in Mumbai and India is still communicating, evaluating and negotiating with Pakistan. There is no point in all these – not any more. It is high time we take resort to violence and belligerence – giving them the same thing they want – this is the language they understand. Why should we talk to them in humane languages, then? No point in discussing anything anymore. I am waiting, along with the whole nation and may be the world too, to see steps being taken against Pakistan. Hope this happens in near future. Amen!

Abolishing Child Labor in India will be a mistake....

Hi, I guess it's been a long time since i posted anything here or anywhere else for that matter. My hiatus partly was induced by my work and partly by some personal reasons. anyway keeping the formalities aside lets hop on to the topic at hand...

I know that the title of the post itself would have raised many arguments against it but please empty thy cup and hear me out a little patiently as I promise to be short, rational and certainly humane in all my arguments.

Q) Why is it that we talk of child labour and abolishing it ?
A) There is an age for everything and as far as a child goes the most appropriate thing for him to do is to learn, play, eat and sleep. A child is generally not expected to head on face the challenges of life and his livelihood needs are meted out by his parents/guardians. A child is tender and also mostly ignorant hence he is often harassed oppressed and taken advantage of, if let out on his own in this society. Child labor needs to be abolished to ensure that the future of these children is a brighter, safer and healthier one.

Q) Agreed, but why does a child need to do labour in the first place ?
A) Money makes the world go round, maybe, but for a child who is working money is needed to be earned to fulfil his bare minimum needs. I can say hopefully that all of us on blogger have been fortunate to have been provided with various comforts of life from the day we are born. Many however are not that fortunate. Hence the need to work, the need to earn a penny, the need to feed the stomach.

Q) Are you suggesting that by banning child labour we will be snatching from these children their means of livelihood? Their bread and butter?
A) I am not suggesting that, I am quoting that.

Q) But.. It's a child!
A) Yes, I am aware of the fact that it is a child and also have those feelings of sorrow for them but along with it I also ensure that I am not blinded by my sorrow. Having some experience with my family NGO, where in some street children were provided with funds to carry on education, i learnt quite a bit about them. here is a child who has the potential to earn and he is earning. More importantly he needs to earn. By banning child labour you are snatching from him the source of his bread and butter. Instead make laws which ensure he gets what he is due for and enforce it. What is the point behind making laws you cannot enforce? What is the point behind making laws where the oppressed is further oppressed ? What is the point behind abolishing child labor when the government has not ensured that each and every such child shall be taken care of by a govt. school or some other set up for these children. I fully support the notion that a child should not be working in his early ages and instead should be equipped with the tools that would help him be a better individual and lead a better life.. As long as that infrastructure and system has not been set in place, please do not let your humanity blind you. Infrastructure takes time to come up, coupled with the over-efficiency of our legislature and bureaucracy it shall take a lot more. There should at least an effort be made to ensure that these children are not exploited and treated fair by the traders instead of blindly cutting of their means to earn without providing them with a meaningful alternative.

Who Is Building The Architectural Marvels of Tomorrow?

Name one beautiful building in your city. Most likely you will name something constructed fifty or more years ago. Most likely the building you name would have been built by the British or one of the erstwhile rulers of India.

I have lived in Delhi most of my life. I have seen new buildings, roads, stadiums, flyovers, metro all come up in my lifetime, but I can count the post independence, beautiful buildings, using the fingers on my two hands. All the landmarks like Red Fort, Rashtrapati Bhawan, Parliament house, Qutub Minar, etc. etc. are from a bygone era. The newer ones like Akshardham, Lotus Temple, are too few. In fact come out any of these buildings and you are greeted by a mess all around.

Architecturally pleasing buildings are typically old

Maybe Delhi is an old city so let us look at Gurgaon. In the past twenty years I have seen Gurgaon come up almost from scratch in front of my eyes. Well there are a few architecturally pleasing buildings otherwise it is a nightmare.

New buildings arent very pretty to look at

Alright maybe our planners spent their energy in designing layouts of cities rather than individual buildings? But even that doesnt seem to have happened. The layout of most cities seems random. In Gurgaon there are malls right next to office complexes and these stand right next to an isolated house on a 250 yards plot. I really pity the family staying in that house, they have no privacy as every window in the office block next to them overlooks their house. Obviously, the plots for houses, shops, malls, apartments, hospitals, etc. were allotted in a random fashion.

Every city in India supposedly has a Chief Town Planner. Both Delhi and Gurgaon have them. But were these people doing their jobs? Villages are better planned. Every village plans where to place its temple and mosque, where the wells should be, where the markets should be, the school, where the open spaces should be, etc. They follow simple logic to ensure that growth doesnt happen haphazardly.

Indians have a very good aesthetic sense. But why isnt it showing in our cities. Why is the view from every window in our city not pleasing to the eyes?

Happy Lohri

Happy Lohri the Jagruk people!!

Lohri is a festival of kites in Punjab and it celebrates the departure of winters.

So with this post, I guess, it is the time to say good bye to the slumber the blog has been into. Being an administrator (thanks to Tushar), I have come up with an idea or two to spread the awareness- the Jagruti.

Here at Jagruti, we mean to have a platform to voice the opinions of youth of the country over the social issues. We are all concerned and feel strongly about those issues, and would want to stand against them and uproot them to make the air in our society worth breathing. We know, we are the youth and we can not only voice, but do things to create a difference.

So, we have come up with a scaffold where the readers and members can post their queries, perplexities, and issues bothering them (for love problems, may be we can have another thread) and ask for solutions, advices and seek recommendations from the members of the blog.

For beta purpose, we are starting this thread on the orkut community of the blog. The link is here. Do visit, spread the awareness among your friends too.

And, this is not all, here is a badge for every member of the team Jagruti, we can flaunt it at our respective blogs and invite other members too.

For joining into the blog and write for it, please leave your mail ids at the chat box of the blog.

Ready to Make A Difference?

Toward the horizon I walked,
Toward the horizon,
Monsoon clouds hoarded.
As the rain pitter-pattered,
I walked on.
The horizon came seem to come.
The end truly wasn't never
Possible still were amends.
The more I walked,
The more I realised,
Over it wasn't.
Each one can still do
What we have to.
We still can
Make a difference.
